Writing a report on the film Hancock

Focus: To identify and comment upon features of an action movie



Answer theses questions after you have viewed the film Hancock - use your notes to support your ideas. Answer the questions into ONE slide of PowerPoint with the other work you have done on film. Aim to write a paragraph for each question.

The shot used here is a close up. I believe the close up has been used so the audience can see the sharpness of the animal's teeth and the threat it poses.

Film Trailers

Focus: To realise the key elements of a film trailer

1. shows which stars are in the film.
2. action edited between director or actor credits on screen .
3. voiceovers help to tell the story & give credits information.
4.titles & key words.
5. short one-liner conversations between characters.
6. Music important to create atmosphere.
7. dramatic camera angles show events or characters.
8. often the title only appears at the end of the trailer.
9. trailer builds to a climax where it ends.
10. montage (mixture of shots & events) is often used to highlight the most dramatic aspects of the film.

Task 1 - Watch the trailer for Hancock. Continuing your Term1 powerpoint list the features of the trailer discussed by the teacher.

3b. Reading Film Posters

STARTER: Look at this poster. What clues (CODES) are there as to what GENRE of film it is and what the PLOT might be?

TASK: Find this poster on the internet and LIST around it what is denoted and what is connoted in this film poster. Denoted = What you actually see; Connoted = what are the possible meanings of what you see. Consider: Characters (consider body language, facial expressions, size, costumes & props); Genre (consider images & text); narrative (storyline); chromatic (colour scheme).

TASK 2: Choose a film poster you like and repeat the above process, try to choose a NON ACTION film poster if you can.

Lesson 2 - Genre

FOCUS: To understand the concept of genre and its use

Starter: How many 'types' of films can you think of with a partner. Aim to have an exampe for each type.
